PH Embassy in Austria Donates P3M to Vienna School

The Embassy of the Philippines in Austria has donated P3 million (about 50,000 euros) to the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Angewandte), which offers studies centered on Filipino culture and heritage.

The donation agreement for the establishment of the Philippine Research Initiative (PRI) was signed on August 24 in Vienna.

The PRI, the embassy said, would be placed under the university’s Artistic Strategies Department, led by Prof. Bouchra Khalil.

It would be the first of its kind in Austria.

“Angewandte is the leading competence center for artistic and scientific research in Austria,” the Philippine embassy said in a statement.

“This initiative not only enhances European understanding of the arts and culture of the Philippines but also kindles genuine interest in our diverse heritage and history, particularly in our strong creative arts tradition,” Philippine Ambassador to Austria Evangelina Lourdes Arroyo-Bernas said.

“I am optimistic that this program will foster cross-cultural appreciation and meaningful exchange,” she added.

The initial offering of the course features a theoretical and practical introduction to Philippine contemporary art and curation.

“Showcasing the rich artistic heritage of the Philippines within a distinguished academic art institution that is located in a city celebrated for its dedication to artistic and cultural endeavors is a milestone for cultural diplomacy,” said Sen. Lorna Regina “Loren” Legarda, who facilitated the donation’s release.

Angewandte Rector Gerald Bast said, “International relations are indispensable elements of living universities.”
