Michael Schmid Becomes Eurojust’s New President

Mr. Michael Schmid, National Member for Austria at Eurojust, has today been elected as the new President of the Agency. He will take up office on 15 November for a four-year term, replacing the current President, Mr Ladislav Hamran, who is completing his second and final term.

Commenting on his election as President by his fellow National Members, Mr Schmid stated: I am obviously delighted by the election and would like to thank my colleagues for giving me their confidence. As we look ahead, my goal is to further strengthen Eurojust’s support for the judicial authorities across Europe.

Michael Schmid has been elected as President of Eurojust, where he will oversee the Agency’s operations, working closely with Eurojust’s Vice-Presidents and Administrative Director. His role includes leading the National Members in the College, who regularly collaborate to strengthen judicial cooperation across the EU.

Mr. Schmid’s career is deeply connected to Eurojust. He first joined as a trainee in 2014 and rose through various roles, including Deputy National Member and Vice-Chair of the Counter-Terrorism Team. Before becoming President, he served as Austria’s National Member at Eurojust and chaired an advisory group on organizational development.

With a law degree from the University of Vienna, Schmid has also been active in education, lecturing at various institutions and training practitioners in EU law enforcement. He brings multilingual skills and extensive experience in criminal law, having worked on Council negotiations and the Digital Services Act during his time as a Justice Counsellor in Brussels.
