Austrian, German tourists pulled to sea off Diamond Beach after rescuing fellow traveler

Two European men are missing after being swept away by strong waves off Diamond Beach in Nusa Penida on Tuesday after attempting to rescue a fellow traveler from drowning, authorities said.

Klungkung Police spokesman Agus Widiono said that the victims are identified as tourists Yury Chernyavskiy, a German national, and Matthias Mittringer from Austria.

A witness told the authorities that he saw both Chernyavskiy and Mittringer, along with two others, attempting to rescue a fellow traveler by the name of Daniel Hrdliczka from drowning on Tuesday afternoon.

While they successfully rescued Hrdliczka, Chernyavskiy and Mittringer were unfortunately pulled to sea by high-tide waves. Several people at the scene reportedly attempted to save the pair, but to no avail.

Agus said that as of yesterday afternoon, authorities had not managed to locate the two men.

Last week, a Malaysian national by the name of Niliasih Jeganathan, 24, was also swept away by the waves of Diamond Beach after rescuing two tourists from drowning. Her lifeless body was found in the morning of Dec. 28.
